Peel, Sir Robert, 2o baronet
(5 feb. 1788, Bury, Lancashire, Inglaterra–2 jul. 1850, Londres).

Primer ministro británico (1834–35, 1841–46) y principal fundador del Partido Conservador. Parlamentario desde 1809, fue primer secretario para Irlanda (1812–18) y resistió los intentos de admitir a los católicos en el parlamento. Como secretario de asuntos internos (1822–27, 1828–30), reorganizó el código penal de Inglaterra. Estableció la primera fuerza policial disciplinada de Londres, cuyos miembros recibieron el apodo de "bobbies o "peelers, en alusión a su nombre y apellido. Después de un breve primer período como primer ministro, llevó al recién formado Partido Conservador a una gran victoria en las elecciones de 1841 y se convirtió de nuevo en primer ministro. Impuso un impuesto sobre la renta, reorganizó el Banco de Inglaterra e inició reformas en Irlanda. Favoreció aranceles reducidos sobre las importaciones y derogó las leyes del Grano, lo que causó la caída de su gobierno, pero continuó apoyando los principios del libre comercio en el parlamento. Fue el principal artífice de la estabilidad y prosperidad de mediados de la era victoriana, pero no vivió para verlo.
